I wonder if you might try asking your buddy Eric if he’d consider Zelle or another form of receiving donations?
Seriously, who knows what is safe anymore, but, at least electronically, it is sent immediately and “so far” in my experience quite safely with an acknowledgement of delivery.

I agree with Debbie. I use Zelle to send money to my grandkids who are away in college and it works great.
Good idea on the electronic funding. PayPal. I use that and have had no problems. That way I won’t find your addressed and stamped envelope ( check inside) in an old phone book six months after the fact.
