We received sad news this morning from retired Sergeant Paul Gardner, that his old car partner Marv Lewis #1447, passed away yesterday, July 3, 2023.  There were few details but Marv and his wife Maureen have a beach house, which is where they were.  Maureen left the house to run some errands and when she returned, she found Marv had passed away.
Our hearts go out to the Lewis Family and all of MArv’s friends from SJPD and beyond.  Please keep them in your thoughts.

6 Thoughts on “Passing of Retired Sgt. Marv Lewis #1447

  1. I first met Marv in ‘69 while he was working for the S.O..He was in lower booking processing my prisoner, typing the intake info on their intake sheet. I asked him, “Why don’t you leave the S.O. and come over to San Jose? He commented, “Ya know?, I’ve been thinking about it.”
Well….about 3 months later, he appeared in midnight briefing in new SJPD sacred cloth, and was assigned to work patrol with me. Oddly, this as I recall was about the same time Bill Mattos made the move. I worked with Marv off and on over the many years at the PD including during the 70’s on motors. I have fond memories of many adventures as well as times spent socially with he, Maureen and my wife. Like so many friends and former coworkers, we lose track especially after moving far out of the area and only get to see one another at the occasional barbecue or sadly, another officer’s memorial or funeral.
Another “Good Guy” now gone…..”Gonna miss ya Marv”……

  2. Marv was just a great person who everyone liked. One year Neal Albee of the training unit had all of us go to the Fremont Drag Strip where a high speed road course was set up so we could all practice our driving skills while under Neal’s observations. Marv and I were in the same car and I drove the damned thing as fast as I could and that impressed Marv. We switched and Marv became the driver determined to drive even faster. He lost control going into a turn and our car slid sideways into a berm built up from recent rains and we did a total Nascar high speed roll over, crashed on the roof and then back on all four wheels. Marv and I were dazed from the crash and banging our helmets together but remember Neal rushing out scared witless that he had just witnessed a fatality! We just got out of the car, dusted ourselves off and proclaimed that we were OK, and that it was no big deal because we were all “macho men” back in those days. What else could we do?

Marv was one of the great ones. RIP

  3. So very sad to learning of the passing of Marv. He was instrumental is teaching me how to be a good police instructor many years ago. Always kind, insightful and patient. A real mentor. RIP Marv. You will be always be fondly remembered. Ron Martinelli, #1854 Ret.

  4. Marv was my Training Officer when I first came on San Jose. He was a hell of an officer and a man of unimpeachable integrity. Rest in Peace Marv.

  5. Another good man from the SJPD Old Guard has passed. May Marv rest in peace through eternity.
