Assistant San Jose Fire Department Chief James Williams has been abruptly fired, according to an email obtained by NBC Bay Area’s Investigative Unit.
“Assistant Fire Chief James A. Williams is separated from the City service effective Sunday, July 27, 2025,” San Jose fire Chief Robert Sapien wrote in an email to department personnel on Monday. “I extend my sincere appreciation for Chief Williams’ service in support of the SJFD mission since April 4, 2021.”
Sapien’s email doesn’t outline why Williams was let go. A spokesperson for the department said he couldn’t comment on personnel matters in response to an inquiry from NBC Bay Area.
Williams’ attorney, Jamon Hicks, did not provide an explanation either but said his client is “exploring all his legal options regarding his unfortunate termination from the city.”
Before joining the San Jose Fire Department, Williams previously served as Sonoma County fire marshal, chief of the Oxnard Fire Department, and as a deputy chief for the Oakland Fire Department.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
