WHO WE ARE
Lumpy coined the phrase, “The Glue That Holds Us Together” to describe the Farsider publication. To further that effort I propose an update to show where we all are now. Last weeks issue including Don Hale and his bride as an example. Pictures and a story of your life up until now including pictures of family, friends, and activities.
My example would be as follows:
A Navy brat, we moved to Irvington (Colby St) in mid 50s, my Dad stationed at Moffett Field.
This picture taken before leaving on the USS Lurline traveling back to CA after 3 year tour in Hawaii. I was seasick for 2 days! We flew back on a Super Connie.

I graduated WHS in 1960, then to Ohlone and San Jose State. My Mom managed the coffee shop at the Fremont Bowl where I worked part time.
While serving a group of regular old timers who loved to chat, I mentioned that I was getting married and should probably find a real job. They suggested I go up to City Hall and check out the job listings. I did and first on the clip board was the Fremont Police Department. I passed written, physical agility, and then oral exam in front of three nearly lieutenants, Lt. Creighton being the most threatening! He asked me, “How long have you wanted to be a police officer?” I related the story about the guys at the coffee shop’s recommendation, and he gruffed, “Humpf, the usual answer is ‘I wanted to be a police officer since I was a little boy….’

So I hired on with Fremont PD in 1964, worked all three shifts, the traffic unit with radar detection , juvenile and burglary units and finally the narcotics unit under Sgt Bert Jensen. Back when an ounce of weed was ten bucks! Bert was offered the job of Chief of the newly funded Solano County Drug Abuse Bureau. Fed money was big then for drug control. He talked me into going with him, along with a couple other guys. We had great success as our office was in Fairfield, the home of Travis Air Force Base. Flying in from many drug producing countries!
After hustling local druggies in undercover buys in Fremont, Alvarado, Niles, Union City, etc; making buys from the young guys off a transports from overseas was like shooting fish in a barrel.
Tired of playing narc, I applied at San Jose PD and was hired in 1972. Spent a very satisfying 20 years before retiring.
Hard to believe, retired now 31 years! Living the life in Murphys, CA.
Murphys? Yes my building contractor son lives in nearby Avery and I wanted to be near the grandkids. Of course they are grown and have their own lives now and I don’t see hide not hair of them. Time flies….
My son, Mike, Building Contractor up here if you want to build anything in Calaveras County or nearby. (shameless plug!)
TMI? Well, that’s what you get from an old timer early in the morning with his first cup of coffee an nothing else to do!

CONSIDER SHARING A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF FOR YOUR FELLOW RETIREES TO SEE.nIT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE ELABORATE AS MINE, AFTER ALL, YOU PROBABLY HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN SCREW AROUND ALL DAY ON YOUR COMPUTER! 🙂 MAYBE JUST THE DATES OF YOUR EMPLOYMENT AND A LITTLE BIT OF WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN DOING SINCE RETIRING. MAYBE INCLUDE A PICTURE OR TWO OF YOU AND THE FAMILY. PAST AND CURRENT.

Scott Campbell woke up on April 19 with a feeling of anticipation and a plan for potential disappointment. A longtime officiator for college football and a retired San Jose firefighter, Campbell had heard rumors that the NFL was making calls that day to a lucky few being recruited as referees for the coming season.
For Campbell, the new job also means he’s carrying on a legacy. He is the second San Jose firefighter to become a league referee after Bill Leavy, who worked for the NFL between 1995 and 2015. Leavy died in March.
He won’t be forgotten, said Campbell, who will be taking over his old No. 127.
“What are the odds that one San Jose firefighter made it to the NFL?” Campbell said. “And then what are the odds that two of them made it?” See Story HERE

RIP Bill Erfurthn
William Edmond Erfurth, “Bill”, aged 84, born in Ventura California, went to be with the Lord on March 4, 2023 in Santa Clara, California.
He was a retired San Jose Police Officer (Lieutenant) of 35 years, former law enforcement instructor at West Valley College, and father. He is survived by his sons William, and James, and his step-sons Jonathon Friedrichs, and Lance Barrett, and his grandchildren Ethan, Isabel, and Abraham.
He attended San Jose State College’s Administration of Justice program.
Needing to get a temporary job, he applied to the San Jose Police Department, and stayed there for a little over 35 years.
He developed and trained officers in unarmed defensive tactics, and woman’s self-defense, and helped develop the San Jose Police Chaplaincy. As a devote man of God, he was best known for his kindness. There will be Celebration of Life, for Bill, May 30th 3:00 PM at the San Jose Police Officer’s Association, at 1151 N. 4th Street, San Jose.

This is possibly the most amazing ski film ever made. Both skiing and film making are on another level. Shot at Zermatt, Switzerland, the film took two years to plan and 90 days to film. The most amazing sequence is when the skier Markus Eder slips into the belly of a glacier (ice cave) to finally emerge a couple of k’s down the mountain. This video will likely quicken your pulse a bit just watching him.
