Data Breach.

The POA delivered this announcement to their members:

The POA has confirmed that a city employee “lost” a thumb drive that “may” contain the names and social security numbers of all current and many past city employees and their dependents.

Setting aside for a moment the outrage and questions the POA has over how this breach occurred and the added danger it places upon our members and their families, we want to inform you that you and your dependents will be receiving a formal letter from the City notifying you of the breach.

The letter will inform you that on January 9 a thumb drive containing the sensitive information was lost, the police department was notified and an investigation launched. The letter you and your dependents will receive will also contain information on how to access a city paid one-year subscription to Epiq Privacy Solutions ID.

We urge all of our members and your dependents to please review your financial account statements for fraud and immediately report any fraud to the appropriate financial institution and to the POA. Rest assured, the POA legal counsel is determining what steps we as a union can take to address this data breach and we will be vigorously inquiring of the City how this happened, who is responsible, is the individual being held accountable and what specific steps are being taken to align the City’s data security policies, procedures and protocols with industry best practices.

We will also demand to know why it took weeks to notify of this egregious breach. In the meantime, as more information is made available we will inform the membership.

Stay safe,
Steve

Lastly, the PBA meeting is next Wednesday, the 18th.
Doors open at 5.

Thank you,

Ernie Alcantar
PBA President
