As technology advances and the public safety landscape continues to evolve, the San José Police Department is taking proactive steps to enhance community security. With the Real-Time Intelligence Center, paired with cutting-edge technologies like Axon Fusus and the software platform Peregrine, our city is safer than ever before. In the coming months we will be adding and testing new technologies that will save lives, better utilize personnel, reduce costs and improve law enforcement outcomes overall.
The SJPD Real Time Intelligence Center (RTIC) is a division responsible for providing focused information and crime analytics to develop an efficient conduit of communication between districts, shifts, investigative units and allied law enforcement agencies. The RTIC is comprised of a team of strategic, tactical and forensic crime analysts that perform real-time crime analysis and data-driven policing by directing resources towards Officers responding to the most urgent calls for service. This helps SJPD leverage technology, data analysis, and collaboration to provide real-time intelligence to law enforcement officers in the field, enabling them to respond more effectively to incidents, prevent crimes, and apprehend suspects.
The recently acquired Fusus is a real-time crime center platform that helps law enforcement agencies respond to incidents and solve crimes. As a part of Axon’s ecosystem of public safety technologies, Fusus provides SJPD with immediate access to integrated video feeds from city-owned traffic cameras. Now, private businesses, and even residents, will be able to partner with SJPD to utilize private security cameras as real-time tools to ensure Officers have the best information available as they respond to incidents. Anyone interested in joining the program is encouraged to visit the Connect San José website to learn more.
SJPD Officers, Detectives, and Analysts have also begun using Peregrine, another newly acquired unified software platform. This tool allows for seamless examination across various police department information sources, including body camera footage and police reports. What used to take days to compile and analyze can now be done in a matter of seconds. Peregrine connects the dots faster, enabling smarter, data-driven decisions that enhance both efficiency and effectiveness in solving crimes.
Bringing together a variety of live video sources, data analytics, and information-sharing platforms, RTIC monitors and analyzes crimes as they are reported in real-time, working hand in hand with our 911 dispatch center.
“The RTIC not only supports law enforcement but empowers the community to play an active role in safety,” said SJPD Chief of Police Paul Joseph. “By collaborating with residents, we are creating a network of security for everyone.”
“In San Jose, we’re increasingly using data and technology to enhance emergency response times and follow up investigations,” said San José Mayor Matt Mahan. “Our new RTIC will not only better leverage the City’s internal capabilities but empower our entire community to contribute relevant evidence while knowing their privacy is protected.”
“I am so proud of the significant step the San José Police Department (SJPD) is taking to advance the City Council Focus Area of Increasing Community Safety through the Real-Time Intelligence Center and new cutting-edge platforms,” said San José City Manager Jennifer Maguire. “Thank you to SJPD for creating a division that utilizes real-time crime analytics and innovative technology to protect our communities. This initiative also creates an opportunity for private businesses and residents to collaborate with SJPD to keep our neighborhoods safe.”
“San Jose is defining what modern public safety can look like—combining cutting-edge technology with a deep commitment to community trust,” stated Peregrine CEO and Co-Founder Nick Noone. “Peregrine is proud to support that mission, helping officers respond faster, think smarter, and act responsibly in high-stakes moments. Together, we’re not just making cities safer—we’re building a model for the future of policing.”
