Sadly, retired Capt. Ken Hawkes #1181 notified the PBA that fellow member and retiree, Lt. Lyle Rice #1179 passed away on Friday, the 19th.

This is really sad news with the passing of not just one of the good guys but one of the best. You couldn’t ask for a better partner whether you were working the street, robbery detectives, or fishing in Alaska. As a cop he was always focused, fair, thorough, and absolutely tenacious. An example was the Uncle Johns Pancake House 211. It took years and case loads were heavy, but he never stopped working that case and finally nailed them. We were together with Tom Mazzone and Gary Leonard on several fishing trips to Alaska and he was always an active part of making those trips fun, like when he carried Mazzone across a stream on his back to improve his position with Tom yelling as he thought he was going to be dropped in the water. One day on a large boat Lyle was fooling around with an ultra light rod with 6 lb. test line and he hooked a big king salmon. The fish made a run and as I stood behind him I watched the line peel off his reel. There were only 2 wraps left, less than a foot of line, when he got the fish stopped. Then Lyle fought him with that little rod for about an hour before the guide was able to boat it. I think that fish was close to 30 lbs. Lyle also was also was a skilled craftsman making beautiful fishing rods,
I know that he suffered in his later years and I suppose that I am consoled that his suffering is ended and he can rest in peace, but he was a special man and a great cop and I shall miss him.
So very sorry to read of Lt. Rice’s passing. He was a pleasure to work with, dedicated and professional and friendly. May he rest in peace.
Sorry to hear this, but if he was suffering at all …… may he rest in eternal peace. One of the H-Car “graduates” that went on to contribute to our esteemed department in so many ways. Great guy. May his memory be eternal.
Lyle Rice was an avid outdoorsman. I had the privilege of riding mountain bikes with Lyle. I recall him bringing raw potatoes for lunch. Lt Rice was a legend. RIP Lyle.
Lyle was a great partner first in Robbery and later the Homicide unit. He was that quiet voice of council and restraint in my ear for those many years we worked together.
Lyle was also a practical joker. Often lifting and shaking Dominic Brocato’s locked desk then having a uniformed officer stand on the desktop while he took a quick Polaroid showing the officers combat boots centered on the desk.
The photo was then slipped into the top desk drawer. All of you who remember Dominic can visualize the next morning in the office. Wonderful guy, very much missed.
