“I am grateful to our Police Department for keeping us safe every single day – and ensuring we can celebrate safely,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said. “As we do with many large events, SJPD will be closing several roads over the Cinco De Mayo weekend and are working hard to ensure the community is prepared for these closures.”

“We’re excited to welcome everyone to the heart of Downtown for the Cinco De Mayo Parade and festivities. Starting with a vibrant parade route from City Hall to Plaza de Cesar Chavez from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., the celebration continues with an activation event featuring music, delicious food, valuable resources, and diverse vendors from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Plaza de Cesar Chavez. Our collaboration with the community, the City’s Office of Economic Development and of Cultural Affairs and SJ Police ensures a safe and fun Cinco De Mayo weekend for all.” -District 3 Council Member Omar Torres.

“As part of the planning process for the East San José Cinco de Mayo Parade & Festival, SJPD participated in our committee meetings and served as a trusted partner who stewarded our event to ensure that it prioritized the safety of all attendees,” said District 5 Council Member Peter Ortiz. “I’m grateful that they’ve stepped up to plan alongside a broad coalition of Elected Officials, Community Based Organizations, Small Business Leaders, and Labor Leaders to produce East San José’s first Cinco de Mayo Parade & Festival, reviving the tradition after decades of dormancy.”

“As we gear up for Cinco de Mayo in San Jose, the San José Police Department is committed to proactive measures for a safe celebration. SJPD is deploying additional resources and temporary road diversions to ensure public safety, allowing residents and visitors alike to celebrate. We want to foster an atmosphere where families can freely enjoy the festivities. Let’s celebrate responsibly,” stated District 8 Council Member Domingo Candelas.

“United Lowrider Council of San José, in partnership with the City and SJPD, is dedicated to preserving San José’s vibrant culture through Lowriding, prioritizing safety, fostering unity, and creating an unforgettable Cinco celebration for all,” stated David Polanco of ULCSJ.

“The San José Police Department’s goal is to ensure our San José community and visitors can safely celebrate Cinco de Mayo,” stated Acting Chief of Police Paul Joseph. “That means we are dedicating resources to minimize traffic impacts and crime, so that the public can maximize their time celebrating at sanctioned events in San José.”

SJPD welcomes and embraces cultural celebrations in San José. Every year, the Department looks forward to working with our community to create a safe and fun environment to celebrate the festivities.

We look forward to celebrating with you.

A reminder to residents and visitors:

To ensure families and visitors can celebrate safely, the Department will be deploying additional personnel and resources to adequately address any public safety issues that may arise including the use of temporary road diversions. As in years past, SJPD will continue to employ zero tolerance for criminal behavior.

In an effort to prepare residents for potential traffic impacts, SJPD provided weekly reminders on social media of planned road closures and locations of possible road diversions. To ensure affected residents and visitors can plan their routes ahead of time, SJPD encourages the public to review the SJPD Cinco de Mayo Traffic Map.

In previous years, SJPD has seen an increase in illegal sideshows and SJPD will be dedicating additional resources to respond to sideshow activity. Sideshow spectators can be issued citations or arrested, and face fines up to $1,000. Drivers participating in sideshows can expect $3,000-$4,000 in fines and a 30-day impound of their vehicle. It’s just not worth it.

3 Thoughts on “Cinco de Mayo Show

  1. Indelible in my memory! My hopes that this one is 180-degrees different than the one I was assigned to manage in mid-90’s! Xa!!! FBI crowd estimate of 440,000 in the greater downtown, and then the fun began, as upper managers intermittently put in their varying 2-cents worth of overall strategic approach. Ultimately a massive sweep of the downtown corridors on foot/horse/motorcycle/bicycle/patrol car rolling facades, then we eventually all went home …. about 16 hours later, after recording/reporting the window-smashes, fires, looting. Please let this one be different.

    1. Kenn,
I was assigned to the “planning” meeting in the late 90’s. When the guy from G.I. Forum carefully explained that drinking beer was part of their culture I very respectfully told him that it was a part that should probably be changed.

I was unassigned from the planning meeting SHORTLY after it adjourned that day, which was just fine with me. Some weeks later Cinco blew up like it always did and people got lots of practice in use of force report writing. Having worked a LOT of time in special ops, NOT working cinco is one of the best things about being retired.
