INTERESTING ESSAY

nMen, like nations, think they’re eternal. What man in his 20s or 30s doesn’t believe, at least subconsciously, that he’ll live forever? In the springtime of youth, an endless summer beckons.nAs you pass 70, it’s harder to hide from reality….as you lose friends and relatives.nNations also have seasons: Imagine a Roman of the 2nd century contemplating an empire that stretched from Britain to the Near East, thinking:nThis will endure forever…. Forever was about 500 years, give or take…. not bad, but gone!!nFrance was pivotal in the 17th and 18th centuries; ow the land of Charles Martel is on its way to becoming part of the Muslim ummah.nIn the 19th and early 20th centuries, the sun never set on the British empire; now Albion exists in perpetual twilight. Its 96-year-old sovereign is a fitting symbol for a nation in terminal decline.nIn the 1980s, Japan seemed poised to buy the world. Business schools taught Japanese management techniques. Today, its birth rate is so low and its population aging so rapidly that annindustry has sprung up to remove the remains of elderly Japanese who die alone.nI was born in 1945, almost at the midpoint of the 20th century – the American century. America’s prestige and influence were never greater. Thanks to the ‘Greatest Generation,’ we won a World Warnfought throughout most of Europe, Asia, and the Pacific. We reduced Germany to rubble and put the rising sun to bed. It set the stage for almost half a century of unprecedented prosperity.nWe stopped the spread of communism in Europe and Asia and fought international terrorism. We rebuilt our enemies and lavished foreign aid on much of the world. We built skyscrapers andnrockets to the moon. We conquered Polio and now COVID. We explored the mysteries of the Universe and the wonders of DNA…the blueprint of life.nBut where is the glory that once was Rome?nAmerica has moved from a relatively free economy to socialism – which has worked so well NOWHERE in the world.nnWe’ve gone from a republican government guided by a constitution to a regime of revolving elites. We have less freedom with each passing year. Like a signpost to the coming reign of terror, nthe cancel culture is everywhere. We’ve traded the American Revolution for the Cultural Revolution.nThe pathetic creature in the White House is an empty vessel filled by his handlers. At the G-7 Summit, ‘Dr. Jill’ had to lead him like a child. In 1961, when we were young and vigorous, ournleader was too. Now a feeble nation is technically led by the oldest man to ever serve in the presidency.nWe can’t defend our borders, our history (including monuments to past greatness) or our streets. Our cities have become anarchist playgrounds. We are a nation of dependents, nmendicants, and misplaced charity. Homeless veterans camp in the streets while illegal aliens are put up in hotels.nThe president of the United States can’t even quote the beginning of the Declaration of Independence (‘You know – The Thing’) correctly.nIvy League graduates routinely fail history tests that 5th graders could pass a generation ago.nnCrime rates soar and we blame the 2nd. Amendment and slash police budgets. Our culture is certifiably insane. Men who think they’re women. People who fight racism bynseeking to convince members of one race that they’re inherently evil, and others that they are perpetual victims. A psychiatrist lecturing at Yale said she fantasizes about ‘unloading a revolverninto the head of any white person.’nWe slaughter the unborn in the name of freedom, while our birth rate dips lower year by year. Our national debt is so high that we can no longer even pretend that we will repay it one day. It’s an$30-trillion monument to our improvidence and refusal to confront reality. Our ‘entertainment’ is sadistic, nihilistic, and as enduring as a candy bar wrapper thrown in the trash. Our music is noisenthat spans the spectrum from annoying to repulsive. Patriotism is called an insurrection, treason celebrated, and perversion sanctified. A man in blue gets less respect than a man in a dress. We’renasking soldiers to fight for a nation our leaders no longer believe in.nnHow meekly most of us submitted to Fauci-ism (the regime of face masks, lockdowns, and hand sanitizers) shows the impending death of the American spirit.nHow do nations slip from greatness to obscurity? * Fighting endless wars they can’t or won’t win * Accumulating massive debt far beyond their ability to repayn* Refusing to guard their borders, allowing the nation to be inundated by an alien horde * Surrendering control of their cities to mob rule * Allowing indoctrination of the youngn* Moving from a republican form of government to an oligarchy * Losing national identity * Indulging indolence * Abandoning God, faith and family – the bulwarks of any stable society.nIn America, every one of these symptoms is pronounced, indicating an advanced stage of the disease.nEven if the cause seems hopeless, do we not have an obligation to those who sacrificed so much to give us what we had? I’m surrounded by ghosts urging me on: the Union soldiers who heldnCemetery Ridge at Gettysburg, the battered bastards of Bastogne, those who served in the cold hell of Korea, the guys who went to the jungles of Southeast Asia and came home to be reviled ornneglected. This is the nation that took in my immigrant grandparents, whose uniform my father and most of my uncles wore in the Second World War. I don’t want to imagine a world without America, neven though it becomes increasingly likely. During Britain’s darkest hour, when its professional army was trapped at Dunkirk and a German invasion seemed imminent, Churchillnreminded his countrymen, ‘Nations that go down fighting rise again, and those that surrender tamely are finished.’nThe same might be said of causes. If we let America slip through our fingers, if we lose without a fight, what will posterity say of us?nnWhile the prognosis is far from good. Only God knows if America’s day in the sun is over.”nRead it and weep, forward or erase it! I read it and am now forwarding it to you, believing that we in America are at the moment in time to stand up, or let it fall! We now may soon beat the nextnstep in our country’s future. I believe that it might be closer than we think. nAuthor UnKnownnn nnn

Long Time Friend, Howard Potash, sent along this reminder…nFrom: Howard J.nSent:  DecembernSubject: Working Christmas Eve – A Police Story

nn

I try to send this out every Christmas along with a few other stories which reflect the feelings that is felt by us…

n

nnHoward J.nnUnlike the newer generations of Cops – most of us went ‘on the job’ as a calling – not a money-making life choice. The job was, at times, almost a religious experience . what we saw, what we did. Things we were privileged to be part of.nnYou may leave the job – but it never really leaves you.nn———————-nnIn 1968 when I became a Cop, I knew there would be special occasions my family would spend without me. Knowing that fact didn’t make the task any easier. The celebrations I missed those first year’s depressed me and sometimes made me feel bitter. Working on Christmas Eve was always the worst.nnOn Christmas Eve in 1977, I learned that blessings can come disguised as misfortune, and honor is more than just a word.nnI was riding one-man patrol on the 4×12 shift. The night was cold. Everywhere I looked I saw reminders of the holiday: families packing their cars with presents, beautifully decorated trees in living room windows and roofs adorned with tiny sleighs. It all added to my holiday funk.nnThe evening had been relatively quiet; there were calls for barking dogs and a residential false burglar alarm. There was nothing to make the night pass any quicker. I thought of my own family and sunk further into depression.nnShortly after 2200 hours I got a radio call to the home of an elderly, terminally ill man. I parked my patrol car in front of a simple cape cod style home. First aid kit in hand, I walked up the short path to the front door. As I approached, a woman who seemed to be about 80 years old opened the door. He’s in here she said, leading me to a back bedroom.nnWe passed through a living room that was furnished in a style I had come to associate with older people. The sofa has an afghan blanket draped over it’s back and a dark, solid, Queen Anne chair sat next to an unused fireplace. The mantle was cluttered with an eccentric mix of several photos, some ceramic figurines and an antique clock. A floor lamp provided soft lighting.nnWe entered a small bedroom where a frail looking man lay in bed with a blanket pulled up to his chin. He wore a blank stare on his ashen, skeletal face. His breathing was shallow and labored. He was barely alive.nnThe trappings of illness lay all around his bed. The nightstand was littered with a large number of pill vials. An oxygen bottle stood nearby. Its plastic hose, with facemask attached rested on the blanket.nnI asked the old woman why she called the police. She simply shrugged and nodded sadly toward her husband, indicating it was his request. I looked at him and he stared intently into my eyes. He seemed relaxed now. I didn’t understand the suddenly calm expression on his face. I looked around the room again. A dresser stood along the wall to the left of the bed. On it was the usual memorabilia: ornate perfume bottles, a white porcelain pin case, and a wooden jewelry case. There were also several photos in simple frames. One caught my eye and I walked closer to the dresser for a closer look. The picture showed a young man dressed in a police uniform. It was unmistakably a photo of the man in bed. I knew then why I was there.nnI looked at the old man and he motioned with his hand toward the side of the bed. I walked over and stood beside him. He slid a thin arm from under the covers and took my hand. Soon, I felt his hand go limp. I looked at his face. There was no fear there. I saw only peace.nnHe knew he was dying; he was aware his time was very near. I know now that he was afraid of what was about to happen and he wanted the protection of a fellow cop on his journey. A caring God had seen to it that his child would be delivered safely to him. The honor of being his escort fell to me.nnWhen I left at the end of my tour that night, the temperature had seemed to have risen considerably, and all the holiday displays I saw on the way home made me smile.nnI no longer feel sorry for myself for having to work on Christmas Eve. I have chosen an honorable profession. I pray that when it’s my turn to leave this world there will be a Cop there to hold my hand and remind me that I have nothing to fear.nnI wish all my brothers and sisters who have to work this Christmas Eve a safe and a Merry Christmas….nn

n

Let’s end this fine year with a tribute/reminder of our founder, Bill Mattos!n
