Remembering what “Memorial Day” really means.

Memorial Day was originally referred to as “Decoration Day” and was first established on May 5, 1868. On that day, Americans would visit the graves of soldiers and sailors killed in battle during American wars and pay their respects to the fallen by cleaning up and decorating their graves.

Memorial Day is not about a three-day weekend, going to the beach, having BBQ’s or commercial sales of products. It should be about reflection, respect, homage and giving thanks to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice at the alter of freedom so we can live free as Americans.

Memorial Day is about remembering that our fallen heroes died in belief of our flag and what its colors represent. Red – symbolizes courage, valor and blood sacrifice. White – for innocence and purity of the American ideals and values. Blue – for vigilance and justice.

nnWhen we remember the fallen, we should also remember and pay tribute to the American flag, our National Anthem and all that they symbolize, for they are one and the same.nnJust some statistics about our wars, conflicts and those who should be remembered on Memorial Day. Lives lost:nn

Most children, young adults and some politicians don’t even know the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. Many others don’t even care. They are easy to recognize, they’re the ones taking a knee or hiding out in a sports team locker room to virtue signal. That’s because we have failed to educate them on the meanings behind the our Flag, our National Anthem and Memorial Day. As responsibility as American adults no matter your politics is to educate these generations. No matter what the naysayers tell you, we are still the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

Someone needs to educate me as to how we are going to produce all the batteries needed to facilitate a transition away from fossil fuels to battery-driven vehicles when the basic ingredients for batteries are all found in rare minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and zinc and others, all of which must be mined in countries not exactly friendly to us. Also, if you have ever driven on the Cross Bronx Expressway or the 405 in Southern California and were stuck in traffic, how exactly will the repair truck reach a disabled vehicle before their battery dies…along with the batteries of all the other vehicles in traffic?

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of the mass shooting at the VTA light rail facility. Thanks to all of you for your support! District Attorney Jeff Rosen presented one of four Medals of Honor from his office to the brave officers of the San Jose Police Department. Sergeant Kevin Sebree and I accepted the award on their behaves. The officers here are the bravest people I know and I wanted to acknowledge the heroism I witnessed that day. You will always hear a brave officer say that any other officer would have done the same thing, but I can say that is simply not true. When you are willing to lay your life down so a stranger can live, that defines what a hero is. A huge thank you to these officers who put it all on the line so others could live. These officers are my heroes and we are forever bonded.
